Biography for January

Hey, I dare you to choose a biography or autobiography to read in January! Come back and tell me about it. I've chosen TEACHER by Helen Keller, about her teacher Anne Sullivan Macy. I chose it because I've always been fascinated with Helen Keller and wanted to read her writing to get a peek into her mind, and can there be anyone more inspiring for a special ed teacher to read about than Anne Sullivan?

Okay, I'm lovin' this book. I wouldn't care if it was the most poorly written book in the world - it's Helen Keller for pete's sake! Anything written by Helen Keller is amazing simply for the fact that she was deaf/blind/and essential dumb. Actually, it was a little too poetic at first - her vocabulary was amazing, but she jumped around too much for me. Towards the middle as events in their lives unfolded, she wrote better, simply because she was telling the story. What I am really enjoying is her description of herself (Helen) as a child before Anne came into her life. She refers to herself as Phantom, a creature moved by instinct and animal urges rather than a person of any understanding. Fascinating stuff.

essentially dumb.

BTW, I've been sick today (my body is trying to pass a kidney stone - ouch! So I've been boiling myself in the tub and reading to try to ignore the discomfort.) I'm about halfway done. I'm thinking that I may make January an all Biography month - of course, I may cheat and count Little Women and the Little House Series (heehee, good way to slip in my favorites.)

Don't you kind of think that anything one writes is, in theory, about oneself - just as any picture one draws is, essentially, a self-portrait?

I can't wait to read this! We're reading Katherine this month for my book club--historical fiction. Close enough to biography...

Helen Keller was amazing! I'm going to go put it on hold at the library toDAY.

I just finished Escape--the one by Carolyn Jessop about her escape from polygamy. Crazy! Okay, now I understand why Warren Jeffs was on the FBI's ten most wanted list. I thought it seemed a little extreme, but now I get it.
