Worst book you've ever read...or attempted to read

My nomination: The Poisonwood Bible.

Seriously. I tried and tried. It was highly recommended. It was for book group. I'd read some of her other books and enjoyed them. What is with this book? I struggled and finally gave up about 1/3 of the way through. Lame. Long. Boring. Nothing caught my interest. Was it the bland characters? Long, descriptive passages? I can't even remember the part I tried to read. Did anyone besides Ophra like this?

What highly recommended, much lauded, best seller did you hate?

Is this Book on the Oprah Winfry book club? I have hated all the books I have read from her list. I read to escape, if I learn somthing or become a better person from reading it. I just concider it a bonus.

There was a time when I was reading voraciously and one book often blends with another... I can't remember if I read this!

Oh, good to know. It is sitting upstairs, waiting to be cracked. I think I will sell it on Half.com instead...

I don't know how I landed on this site, but I had to comment. Everyone has a different perspective, right? Not wrong, just different. Here's mine. The Poisonwood Bible, for me, was truly life changing. I wrote an entire post about it. I thought it expounded on life in Africa, how foreigners feel about insensitive Americans, how a man's pride got in the way of even the most inspired work, and how a culture, when we embrace it, becomes a part of us. I thought it was well written, revealing, accurate, and a phenomenal story to boot. It is realistic, so I wouldn't call it a fast read or something someone should pick up to escape. But... it is definitely worth trying. Just my opinion!

I loved the Poisonwood Bible. It is one of my favorite books. I love Barbara Kingsolver, she is an incredible writer!

the book I hate that everyone seems to love is "the other boylen sister"

I hated, loathed dispised that book! It's just never OK in my book for a 30 year to have sex with an 11 year old. Ever. Blech.
